Racing NSW Closes Broadmeadow For Track Repairs
Racing NSW yesterday “suspended racing at Newcastle’s Broadmeadow Racecourse to undertake urgent track rectification works”. Representatives from Racing NSW including chief steward Ray Murrihy, general manager industry Scott Kennedy, projects manager Andrew Small & racecourse maintenance consultant Dave Hodgson met Newcastle Turf Club officials & representatives from the NSW Jockeys Association “to discuss the impact of corrugations at present on the Broadmeadow course proper.” Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys commented: “Although opinion was divided about the best course of action, we decided the corrugations in the course proper represent a risk to the safety of riders & horses in races, which we are not prepared to take.” The Club had commissioned work on the inside 7m of the course proper, but “following discussions the work will be extended to cover a greater area”. The transfer of Newcastle race dates over the next 8 weeks “will be announced in the next 24 hours”.
