Wednesday, 26th October 2011

Kentucky-based Castleton Lyons stallion Bernstein (Storm Cat-La Affirmed, by Affirmed) who has sired 70 stakes-winners “was euthanased because of complications from colic” reported bloodhorse.com. Bernstein (whose 2011 service fee at Castle Lyons for US$20,000) initially stood at Buck Pond Farm in Kentucky & shuttled to Argentina (where he was twice leading sire). His star progeny include US Gr1-winners Dream Empress & Miss World, Japanese champion Goshawk Ken & Argentine champions Storm Military, Savoir Bien, Storm Mayor & Storm Marcopolo. Bernstein’s runners have earned more than US$33.8 million. Bred in Kentucky by Elizabeth Moran’s Brushwood Stable, Bernstein was purchased as a weanling for US$925,000 at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale by Coolmore’s Demi O’Byrne. Sent to Ireland, he won the Gr3 Railway Stakes & Gr3 Concorde Stakes; he finished his career in the US & overall recorded 4 wins from 8 starts. Bernstein (whose 3rd-dam Finance is a half-sister to Horse-Of-The-Year Buckpasser) is a full-brother to graded stakes-winners Caress & Country Cat, plus a half-brother to Della Francesca.
