UK Tatts HIT Day-3: $429k Verdant

Thursday, 27th October 2011

Bloodstock agent Stephen Hillen (acting for Victorian trainer Robert Smerdon) paid 260,000 guineas (A$429,000) for 4YO entire Verdant (Singspiel-Orford Ness, by Selkirk) consigned by Juddmonte Farms. Verdant carries a Timeform rating of 107 & Smerdon (who trains 70 horses at Caulfield) commented: “I have trained an odd horse from Europe, but this is our first venture over here. We got in touch with Steve (Hillen) through Johnny Murtagh, who is a good friend of Australian trainer John Sadler. We were hoping to buy, but it wasn't the be-and-end-all to buy here - we just thought the exercise would be good to do to make contacts & find out the lay of the land. We are, of course, like all the Australians here, looking for Cup horses.” Hillen & Smerdon also paid 180,000 guineas (A$297,000) for Juddmonte-consigned 3YO colt Arch Fire (Arch-Quickfire, by Dubai Millennium) carrying a Timeform rating of 101 & Hillen added: “These were the 2 we really liked. They are the only 2 we bid on - the Singspiel in particular, they get better with age & act on quick ground. They are both proper horses.”
