Thursday, 27th October 2011

US multiple Gr2-winning & multiple Gr1-placed 6YO stallion Crown Of Thorns (Repent-Crowning Touch, by Thunder Gulch) will enter stud in 2012 at Cloverleaf Farms II in Florida, after bring purchased from B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm, reported bloodhorse.com. Crown Of Thorns (a US$300,000 2YO-in-training at the 2007 Ocala Breeders March Sale) recorded 3 wins (including May’s Gr2 Mervyn Leroy Handicap over 8.5 furlongs at Hollywood Park & 2008’s Gr2 Robert Lewis Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Santa Anita) & 5 Gr1-placings (in August’s Gr1 Pat O’Brien Stakes over 7 furlongs at Del Mar, plus 2010’s Gr1 Goodwood Stakes over 9 furlongs at Hollywood Park & Gr1 Pat O’Brien Stakes over 7 furlongs at Del Mar, as well as 2009’s Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint over 6 furlongs at Santa Anita & Gr1 Ancient Title Stakes over 6 furlongs at Santa Anita) from 13 starts for US$821,693 earnings. Cloverleaf general manager Matt Lyons commented: “Crown of Thorns was a tremendously talented individual. He had the speed to almost win a Breeders Cup Sprint going 6 furlongs & the durability to carry his speed to 2 graded wins at 8.5 furlongs. We feel he will be a great fit for the Florida market.” Crown of Thorns’s dam Crowning Touch is a half-sister to champion sprinter Smoke Glacken & Gr2-winner Smokey Glacken.
