Kentucky Yearlings Day-3: US$270k Smart Strike Colt

Friday, 28th October 2011

Canadian-based trainer Mark Casse paid US$270,000 for a Shadwell-bred colt by Smart Strike (the 2nd foal out of stakes-winning Green Dancer mare Yaqeen) consigned by Meg Levy’s Bluewater Sales as agent. The colt’s dam Yaqeen is a half-sister to both US multiple Gr1-winner Grand Courturier & UK stakes-winner Alainmaar. Casse commented to bloodhorse.com: “How can you not like a Smart Strike? I thought this was a really pretty colt. He met all my criteria. I thought he had a great neck & shoulder & a strong back.” Smart Strike (who stands at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky) was North America’s leading sire by progeny earnings in 2007-08 & Bluewater’s Meg Levy added: “He’s a beautiful horse & he is a speedier example of his sire than most. He has a big hip & beautiful hind leg. Smart Strikes tend to be longer, taller, leggier sort of versions that look like they’ll take more time. This horse looks like he will bring it to the table quicker. It’s great he got with a trainer like Mark Casse because Mark Casse certainly knows how to get speed out of a horse. It looks like he might be a good 2YO & quite a few pin-hookers were interested in him.”
