Monday, 31st October 2011

Phillip Esplin, a director of the Arrowfield Group from its inception in 1985 until 1997, died on Friday. Esplin (a commercial lawyer) also served on the board of the Australian Jockey Club & as a Director & acting chairman of Racing NSW. He was also a prominent breeder, operating under the Twin Palms Stud banner. On his own account & in partnership with the Johnson family, he was responsible for many stakes-winners, including top stallions Reset & Charge Forward, Golden Slipper winner Merlene, plus Miss Pennymoney, Timbourina, Well Rounded, Fast n Famous & Duelled. Arrowfield chairman John Messara commented: “Phillip was a fierce competitor in every sphere. He had the capacity to think outside the square & was always clear & direct in his assessments. This made him a great advocate to have on your side & a formidable opponent. In the 30 years that I knew Philip, he constantly tested my ideas & opinions & I will miss our often lengthy debates on racing topics.”
