Sangster Wins Gr1 Victoria Derby

NZ Waikato Stud-based multiple Gr1-winning stallion Savabeel (Zabeel-Savannah Success, by Success Express) added a Gr1 triumph (& 11th individual stakes-winner & 2nd Gr1-winner) when gelded son Sangster (Savabeel-Quinta Special, by Spectrum) scored by a head in the $1.5 million Gr1 Victoria Derby (2500m) for 3YOs at Flemington. Sangster (ridden by Hugh Bowman for trainer Trent Busuttin) defeated fellow gelding Induna (Elusive Quality-Camarena, by Danehill) & the colt Sabrage (Charge Forward-Galroof, by Maroof). Sangster (a NZ$19,000 2YO at the 2010 NZ Bloodstock Ready-To-Run Sale) took his record to 3 wins & 3 placings (including his last 2 starts in the Gr1 Inglis Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m at Randwick on October 1 & Gr3 Norman Robinson Stakes over 2000m at Caulfield on October 15, plus September’s Listed Ming Dynasty Handicap over 1400m at Warwick Farm) from 8 starts for $1,015,851 earnings.
