Helmet 12th in Gr2 UAE Derby

Monday, 2nd April 2012

Front-running Australian triple Gr1-winning colt Helmet (Exceed And Excel-Accessories, by Singspiel) was pushed to lead early, but jockey Kerrin McEvoy said he "never switched off" in the middle stages & subsequently compounded in the straight to finish 12th of the 14 runners behind US-bred colt Daddy Long Legs (Scat Daddy-Dreamy Maiden, by Meadowlake) in the US$2 million Gr2 UAE Derby (1900m on all-weather) for 3YOs at Meydan. Daddy Long Legs (ridden by Colm O'Donoghue for trainer Aidan O'Brien) scored by 1.25-lengths from French-bred gelding Yang Tse Kiang (Kahyasi-Mikalia, by Kaldoun) & Irish-bred colt Wrote (High Chaparral-Desert Classic, by Green Desert). Daddy Long Legs (a US$100,000 yearling at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Sale) took his record to 3 wins (also including 2011's UK Gr2 Royal Lodge Stakes over 8 furlongs at Ascot) from 5 starts for US$1,308,909 earnings.
