Vic Stewards "Strangles Warning" At Warrnambool

Friday, 27th April 2012

Racing Victoria stewards "have been advised of horses displaying symptoms of an upper respiratory tract disease that may be consistent with Strangles in a stable within the training complex adjoining Warrnambool Racecourse". Horse movement controls & biosecurity procedures "under the guidance of a local veterinarian in consultation with RV, have been implemented" & "samples have been collected from affected horses & forwarded to a clinical laboratory for confirmatory testing". Stewards have notified all trainers within the complex of the matter & have "directed them to implement their own biosecurity procedures, including twice daily temperature monitoring & hygiene procedures to prevent the introduction & transmission of the disease". These stables & others within the Warrnambool district "are free to continue training their horses, but have been asked to contact RV stewards & their stable veterinarian should a horse show signs of a high temperature, nasal discharge and/or swollen lymph node glands in the throat".
