Veteran Mustard Retired At 14

Friday, 4th May 2012

Trainer John McNair announced veteran dual Gr3-winning gelding Mustard (Vettori-Altezza, by Rigoletto) has finally been retired aged 14. McNair told racenet.com.au: "He's been a great servant to us. His owner Terry Rohde & I were in our 40s when he started racing & now we're in our 60s. He's had a lucky life & he's sound & happy, so that's the main thing. It's the end of an era for us." Overall Mustard (a $16,000 yearling at the 1999 Magic Millions Summer Sale & subsequently sold for $45,000 as an older horse at the 2004 Inglis Spring Thoroughbred Sale) recorded 17 wins (including 2006's Gr3 Concorde Stakes over 1100m at Rosehill & Gr3 Star Kingdom Stakes over 1100m at Rosehill, plus 2004's Listed Razor Sharp Stakes over 1100m at Randwick & Listed Maurice McCarten Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill) & 30 placings (including both 2006's Listed Ladies Day Cup over 1300m at Hawkesbury & Listed The Schweppervescence over 1200m at Rosehill, plus 2005's Gr2 Dodo Sprint over 1100m at Caulfield & Gr3 The Shorts over 1100m at Randwick) from 131 starts for over $800,000 earnings.
