Believe You Can Wins US Gr1 Kentucky Oaks

Monday, 7th May 2012

Airdrie Stud principal Brereton Jones's home-bred filly Believe You Can (Proud Citizen-El Fasto, by El Prado) scored a 0.75-length victory in the US$1 million Gr1 Kentucky Oaks (9 furlongs) for 3YO fillies at Churchill Downs. Believe You Can (ridden by Rosie Napravnik, who became the 1st female jockey to win the Oaks, for trainer Larry Jones) defeated front-running Broadway's Alibi (Vindication-Broadway Gold, by Seeking The Gold) after a heart-stopping head-to-head battle down the length of the straight, with favourite Grace Hall (Empire Maker-Season's Greetings, by Ezzoud) in 3rd-placing. Believe You Can took her record to 6 wins (also including March's Gr2 Fair Grounds Oaks over 8.5 furlongs at Fair Grounds & January's Listed Silverbulletday Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Fair Grounds, plus 2011's Gr3 Tempted Stakes over 6 furlongs at Belmont Park) from 9 starts for US$1,059,484 earnings.
