Xtension Wins HK Gr1 Champions Mile

In Hong Kong yesterday, former WA Oakland Park shuttler Xaar (Zafonic-Monroe, by Sir Ivor) added a Gr1 triumph when Irish-bred 4YO gelding Xtension (Xaar-Great Joy, by Grand Lodge) scored a half-length victory in the HK$12 million (A$1.5m) Gr1 Champions Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin to claim this race for the 2nd successive year. Xtension (ridden by James McDonald for expatriate Australian trainer John Moore) defeated Australian-bred 4YO gelding Glorious Days (Hussonet-San Century, by Centaine) & Irish-bred 5YO gelding Lucky Nine (Dubawi-Birjand, by Green Desert). Xtension took his record to 2 wins (also including 2011's Gr1 Champions Mile  over 1600m at Sha Tin) & 7 placings (including February's Gr1 Gold Cup over 2000m & January's Gr1 Stewards Cup over 1600m, plus 2011's Gr1 International Mile over 1600m, Gr1 Hong Kong Derby over 2000m & Gr1 Hong Kong Classic Mile over 1600m) from 14 Hong Kong starts. As a 2YO Xtension won the Gr2 Vintage Stakes (7 furlongs) at Doncaster in England & was placed in England's Gr1 Dewhurst Stakes (7 furlongs); & as a 3YO he finished 3rd in France's Gr1 Prix Jean Prat (1600m). Xtension was a €15,000 (A$19,000) yearling at the 2008 Tattersalls Ireland September Sale.
