Monday, 21st May 2012

In the UK, former Coolmore shuttler & Gr1 English Derby winner Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) added a Gr1 triumph when Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farm home-bred unbeaten 4YO entire Frankel (Galileo-Kind, by Danehill) who is currently the world's highest-rated horse, returned from a 7-months spell & continued his rise to super-stardom by blitzing his rivals by 5-lengths in the £175,000 (A$280,000) Gr1 Lockinge Stakes (8 furlongs) for 4YOs & up at Newbury. Hot favourite Frankel (ridden by Tom Queally for trainer Sir Henry Cecil) powered away over the final 2 furlongs to defeat Irish-bred fellow 4YO entire Excelebration (Exceed And Excel-Sun Shower, by Indian Ridge) with a further 4-lengths back to another 4YO entire Dubawi Gold (Dubawi-Savannah Belle, by Green Desert). Frankel notched his 5th successive Gr1 victory (& 6th overall) to take his record to 10 wins (also including 2011's Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over 8 furlongs at Ascot, Gr1 Sussex Stakes over 8 furlongs at Goodwood, Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes over 8 furlongs at Royal Ascot, Gr1 English 2000 Guineas over 8 furlongs at Newmarket & Gr3 Greenham Stakes over 7 furlongs at Newbury, plus 2010's Gr1 Dewhurst Stakes over 7 furlongs at Newmarket & Gr2 Royal Lodge Stakes over 8 furlongs at Ascot) from 10 starts for £1,471,952 (A$2.355m) earnings.
