Gentildonna Wins Gr1 Japanese Oaks

Monday, 21st May 2012

In Japan yesterday, Northern Racing-bred Gentildonna (Deep Impact-Donna Blini, by Bertolini) notched her 2nd successive Gr1 triumph in a month & blitzed her rivals by 5-lengths in the ¥202.16m (A$2.571m) Gr1 Yushun Himba-Japanese Oaks (2400m) for 3YO fillies at Tokyo. Gentildonna (ridden by Yuga Kawada for trainer Sei Ishizaka) defeated Verxina (Deep Impact-Halwa Sweet, by Machiavellian) & Ice Follies (Stay Gold-Lilium, by Kurofune). Gentildonna is the 2nd foal out of Donna Blini, who won 2005's UK Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes & UK Gr2 Cherry Hinton Stakes, before being purchased by Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm at the 2006 UK Tattersalls December Mare Sale for 500,000 guineas (A$825,000). Gentildonna took her record to 4 wins (also including April's Gr1 Oka Sho-1000 Guineas over 1600m at Hanshin & January's Gr3 Sho Shinzan Kinen over 1600m at Kyoto) & a runner-up from 6 starts for ¥292.376 million (A$3.719m) earnings.
