I'll Have Another Wins US Gr1 Preakness Stakes

Monday, 21st May 2012

In the US, a record 121,309 fans saw J. Paul Reddam's colt I'll Have Another (Flower Alley-Arch's Gal Edith, by Arch) follow-up his win in the Gr1 Kentucky Derby on May 5 with victory by neck in the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown, US$1 million Gr1 Preakness Stakes (9.5 furlongs) for 3YOs at Baltimore's Pimlico racetrack in Maryland. In an almost exact replica of the Kentucky Derby finish, I'll Have Another (ridden by Mario Gutierrez for trainer Doug O'Neill) sustained a long run down the middle of the straight to just catch front-running favoured fellow colt Bodemeister (Empire Maker-Untouched Talent, by Storm Cat) with another colt Creative Cause (Giant's Causeway-Dream Of Summer, by Siberian Summer) in 3rd-placing. I'll Have Another (originally a US$11,000 yearling at the 2010 Keeneland September Sale & subsequently a US$35,000 2YO at the 2011 Ocala Breeders April Sale) took his overall record to 5 wins (also including last start's Gr1 Kentucky Derby over 10 furlongs at Churchill Downs, plus April's Gr1 Santa Anita Derby over 9 furlongs at Santa Anita & February's Gr2 Robert Lewis Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Santa Anita) & a runner-up (in 2011's Gr2 Best Pal Stakes over 6.5 furlongs at Del Mar) from 7 starts for US$2,693,600 earnings.
