Mawingo Wins Gr1 Doomben Cup

Monday, 21st May 2012

Australian Bloodstock's latest German-bred stayer (following last year's Gr1 Melbourne Cup 3rd-placed Lucas Cranach) the lightly-raced 4YO entire Mawingo (Tertullian-Montfleur, by Sadler's Wells) snatched victory by a short-neck & set a new course record in the $500,000 weight-for-age Gr1 Doomben Cup (2000m) at Doomben in Brisbane. Mawingo (ridden by Nash Rawiller for trainer Anthony Freedman) clocked 2min 2.03sec (& survived a protest by the 3rd horse) in defeating 4YO mare Lights of Heaven (Zabeel-I'm In Heaven, by Volksraad) & favoured 6YO gelding Manighar (Linamix-Mintly Fresh, by Rubiano). Mawingo took his record to 4 wins (also including 2011's German Gr3 Bavarian Classic over 2000m at Munich) & 4 placings (including last start's Gr2 A.D.Hollindale Stakes over 1800m at the Gold Coast on May 5, plus 2011's German Gr3 Fruhjahrs-Preis Des Bankhaus Metzler over 2000m at Frankfurt, as well as 4th in the Gr1 Deutsches Derby over 2400m) from 10 starts for $494,193 earnings.
