Melb Cup Runner-Up Red Cadeaux Wins UK Gr2
Also in the UK, 6YO gelding Red Cadeaux (Cadeaux Genereux-Artisia, by Peintre Celebre) who finished runner-up by a nose (behind Dunaden) in last year's Gr1 Melbourne Cup, continued his build-up for a return to Australia later in the year with a 1-length victory in the £140,000 (A$224,000) Gr2 Yorkshire Cup (14 furlongs) at York. Red Cadeaux (ridden by Tom McLaughlin for trainer Ed Dunlop) defeated 4YO gelding Glen's Diamond (Intikhab-Posta Vecchia, by Rainbow Quest) & 5YO gelding Harris Tweed (Hernando-Frog, by Akarad). Red Cadeaux was originally a 55,000 guineas (A$91,000) yearling at the 2007 UK Tattersalls October Sale . Overall he now has 6 wins (also including 2011's Irish Gr3 Curragh Cup over 14 furlongs at the Curragh & UK Listed Braveheart Stakes over 12 furlongs at Hamilton) & 10 placings (including last start's UK Gr3 Sagaro Stakes over 2 miles at Kempton Park on May 2, plus 2011's Gr1 Melbourne Cup over 3200m at Flemington, HK Gr1 International Vase over 2400m at Sha Tin & Gr1 Irish Field St Leger over 14 furlongs at The Curragh, as well as 2010's Listed Chester Handicap over 13.5 furlongs at Chester) from 27 starts for £905,047 (A$1.448m) earnings. After the race, trainer Dunlop confirmed: "The plan is to go back for the Melbourne Cup, but I don't know what we'll do in the interim. He's in the Gr1 Coronation Cup (June 2 at Epsom), we might give that a go, and he's also in the Gr2 Hardwicke Stakes (June 23) at Royal Ascot. He will race on until Royal Ascot & after that he'll have a holiday. We'll then bring him back & give him a prep before Australia, where he might run twice, so let's hope he stays in one piece."
