Qld Chief Steward Threatens "Harsher Penalties"

Tuesday, 22nd May 2012

Racing Queensland chief steward Wade Birch "is considering harsher penalties for Brisbane Winter Carnival careless riding charges after a horror Doomben Cup meeting on Saturday" reported The Courier-Mail. Birch said he was "very disappointed with the standard of riding after a day where 5 senior jockeys - Nash Rawiller, Peter Mertens, Opie Bosson, Vlad Duric & Paul Hammersley - were outed for causing interference". He declared bluntly: "I'd expect a far better effort from the riders than what we got on Saturday. I spoke to the jockeys prior to the Doomben Roses & warned them to be careful. I've not previously been inclined to issue fines as well as the suspensions for careless riding incidents, but I'm now giving that serious thought."
