US Maryland 2YOs Day-1: US$575k Scat Daddy Colt

Wednesday, 23rd May 2012

In the US auction ring, Kentucky's Hill 'n' Dale Farm bloodstock services director Donato Lanni (acting for Ernie Moody's Mercedes Stables) out-bid David Ingordo from Lane's End Bloodstock to pay top price of US$575,000 for a colt by Ashford Stud's multiple Gr1-winning stallion & last year's US Champion 1st-Season Sire Scat Daddy (the 1st foal out of unraced Congaree mare Magical Mist) during the opening session at the 2-day Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2YOs-In-Training Sale at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium. The colt (whose dam Magical Mist is a half-sister to Gr1-winner JP's Gusto) was consigned by Raul Reyes's Kings Equine as agent & clocked 10.2sec for 1 furlong during the pre-sale breeze-up session. Lanni said the colt will be sent to US Hall-Of-Fame trainer Bob Baffert & noted: "Scat Daddy has done a lot of good things & he (the colt) looked a lot like a really good Congaree. Bobby (Baffert) came out here on Sunday (May 20) after the Preakness Stakes & I showed him the horse; he really liked him. His work (breeze-up) was really good & he is a really well-made horse. He looked fast." John & Susan Sykes (who bred the colt in the name of CloverLeaf Farms II) purchased the colt's dam Magical Mist (carrying the colt) for US$14,000 at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky February Mixed Sale.
