Aust-Bred Delago Deluxe Wins South Africa Gr1

Monday, 28th May 2012

In South Africa, Coolmore's former dual Australian Champion Sire Encosta de Lago (Fairy King-Shoal Creek, by Star Way) added a Gr1 triumph when Australian-bred 3YO colt Delago Deluxe (Encosta De Lago-Succeeding, by Flying Spur) scored a 1.25-lengths victory over his older rivals in the R600,000 (A$75,000) Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint (1200m) at Scottsville in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal. Delago Deluxe (ridden by Anton Marcus for trainer Charles Laird) defeated 4YO gelding Snowdon (Western Winter-Antonia's Law, by National Assembly) & 6YO gelding Shades Of Indigo (Indigo Magic-Palace Bride, by Palace Music). Delago Deluxe (a $550,000 yearling consigned from Gerry Harvey's Baramul Stud at the 2010 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale) took his record to 7 wins (also including 2011's Gr1 Gold Medallion over 1200m at Scottsville, Gr2 SA Nursery over 1160m at Turffontein & Gr3 Protea Stakes over 1100m at Turffontein) & 3 placings (including 2011's Gr2 Merchant's Stakes over 1200m at Kenilworth & Gr3 Cape Classic over 1400m at Kenilworth) from 11 starts. Last season Delago Deluxe won the Equus Award as South Africa's Champion 2YO.
