Shackleford Wins US Gr1 Metropolitan Handicap

On the Memorial Day holiday in the US, front-running 4YO entire & last season's 3YO Classic-winner Shackleford (Forestry-Oatsee, by Unbridled) scored by a nose in the US$750,000 Gr1 Metropolitan Handicap (8 furlongs) at Belmont Park in New York. Shackleford (ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Dale Romans) defeated fast-finishing fellow 4YO entire Caleb's Posse (Posse-Abbey's Missy, by Slewacide) & favoured 4YO entire To Honor And Serve (Bernardini-Pilfer, by Deputy Minister). Shackleford took his record to 5 wins (also including last start's Gr2 Churchill Downs Handicap over 7 furlongs at Churchill Downs on May 5, plus 2011's Gr1 Preakness Stakes over 9.5 furlongs at Pimlico) & 5 placings (in April's Gr1 Carter Handicap over 7 furlongs at Aqueduct, plus 2011's Gr1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile over 8 furlongs at Churchill Downs, Gr1 Haskell Invitational Handicap over 9 furlongs at Monmouth Park, Gr1 Florida Derby over 9 furlongs at Gulfstream Park & Gr2 Indiana Derby over 8.5 furlongs at Hoosier Park) from 16 starts for US$2,741,381 earnings.
