Camelot Wins Gr1 English Derby

Monday, 4th June 2012

Recently-deceased dual-Derby winning Coolmore stallion & former NZ Windsor Park shuttler Montjeu (Sadler's Wells-Floripedes, by Top Ville) added a Gr1 triumph when Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier & Michael Tabor's unbeaten colt Camelot (Montjeu-Tarfah, by Kingmambo) motored home from the rear of the field to maintain his perfect record with a 5-lengths blitz of his rivals in the £1.325 million (A$2.12m) Gr1 English Derby (12 furlongs) for 3YOs at Epsom Downs. Favourite Camelot (ridden by Joseph O'Brien for trainer Aidan O'Brien) defeated US-bred colt Main Sequence (Aldebaran-Ikat, by Pivotal) & the winner's front-running stable-mate Irish-bred colt Astrology (Galileo-Ask For The Moon, by Dr Fong). Camelot was a 525,000 guineas (A$866,000) yearling at the 2010 UK Tattersalls October Sale. He now has 4 wins (also including May's UK Gr1 2000 Guineas over 8 furlongs at Newmarket & 2011's Gr1 Racing Post Trophy over 8 furlongs at Doncaster) from 4 starts for £1,106,600 (A$1.771m) earnings.
