St Nicholas Abbey Wins UK Gr1 Coronation Cup

Recently-deceased dual-Derby winning Coolmore stallion & former NZ Windsor Park shuttler Montjeu (Sadler's Wells-Floripedes, by Top Ville) added a UK Gr1 triumph (plus 3rd-placing) when Irish-bred 5YO entire St Nicholas Abbey (Montjeu-Leaping Water, by Sure Blade) came from the tail of the field to race away for a 4.5-lengths victory in the £300,000 (A$480,000) Gr1 Coronation Cup (12 furlongs) for 4YOs & up at Epsom Downs to take this race for the 2nd successive year. St Nicholas Abbey (ridden by Joseph O'Brien for trainer Aidan O'Brien) defeated 6YO gelding & last year's Gr1 Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux (Cadeaux Genereux-Artisia, by Peintre Celebre) & 4YO entire Masked Marvel (Montjeu-Waldmark, by Mark Of Esteem); Australian-owned pair Quest For Peace & Beaten Up (both of whom are potential candidates for this year's Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, finished 4th & 5th. St Nicholas Abbey was a 200,000 guineas (A$330,000) yearling at the 2008 UK Tattersalls October Sale & ended his unbeaten juvenile season as 2009's European Champion 2YO Male at the Cartier Awards. Overall he now has 7 wins (also including 2011's US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Turf over 12 furlongs at Churchill Downs, UK Gr1 Coronation Cup over 12 furlongs at Epsom Downs & UK Gr3 Ormonde Stakes over 13.5 furlongs at Chester, plus 2009's UK Gr1 Racing Post Trophy over 8 furlongs at Doncaster & Irish Gr2 Beresford Stakes over 8 furlongs at The Curragh) & 5 placings (in May's Gr3 Mooresbridge Stakes over 10 furlongs at The Curragh & March's UAE Gr1 Dubai Sheema Classic over 2400m at Meydan, plus 2011's UK Gr1 King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 12 furlongs at Ascot, French Gr2 Prix Foy over 2400m at Longchamp & Irish Listed Alleged Stakes over 10 furlongs at The Curragh) from 14 starts for £2,482,558 (A$3.972m) earnings.
