Was Wins Gr1 English Oaks

Monday, 4th June 2012

Former Coolmore shuttler & Gr1 English Derby winner Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) added a Gr1 triumph when Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier & Michael Tabor's Irish-bred daughter Was (Galileo-Alluring Park, by Green Desert) scored by a neck in the £350,000 (A$560,000) Gr1 English Oaks (12 furlongs) for 3YO fillies at Epsom Downs. Was (ridden by Seamus Heffernan for trainer Aidan O'Brien) defeated Shirocco Star (Shirocco-Spectral Star, by Unfuwain) & favoured US-bred The Fugue (Dansili-Twyla Tharp, by Sadler's Wells). Coolmore representative Demi O'Byrne paid a sale-topping 1.2 million guineas (A$1.98m) for Was at the 2010 UK Tattersalls October Yearling Sale; that also made her Europe's highest-priced yearling in 2010. Was took her record to 2 wins & a placing (in May's Irish Gr3 Blue Wind Stakes over 10 furlongs at Naas) from 3 starts for £223,767 (A$358,000) earnings.
