Qld Prize-Money Increases From Sep 1
Racing Queensland announced prize-money increases for the coming racing year, effective from September 1. RQ chairman Kevin Dixon noted "an immediate priority for the RQ board has been to ensure metropolitan mid-week thoroughbred racing is once again competitive & have therefore resolved to increase prize-money from $13,000-per-race to $17,000. At the same time, metropolitan mid-week meetings will return to 8 races". In addition 42 mid-week races for 2YOs & 3YOs "will now be classed as QTIS bonus races, carrying added prize-money of $10,000-per-race, giving these races a total purse of $27,000". Dixon added: "This initiative means metropolitan mid-week meetings will increase from total prize-money of $91,000 to $146,000-per-meeting, an increase of 60%. We know better prize-money attracts better fields, which in turn attracts higher wagering & it is wagering that keeps the industry ticking over." Dixon said Queensland country thoroughbred racing will also benefit from this announcement with "non-strategic race meetings' prize-money increasing from $4,000-per-race to $5,000". Dixon also added: "RQ has stated an intention of achieving prize-money parity between strategic & non-strategic racedays & this announcement represents the 1st move toward that aim. It is our intention to move to $6,000 as funding becomes available. This is in addition to the $1 million funding pledged by the State Government for 20 extra country racing meetings."
