Top UK Stayer Sans Frontieres Aimed At Melb Cup

Tuesday, 12th June 2012

Meanwhile Sir Robert Ogden's Gr1-winning 6YO stayer Sans Frontieres (Galileo-Llia, by Shirley Heights) who was among the favourites for the 2010 Gr1 Melbourne Cup before an attack of azoturia (a condition that affects the muscles of horses) forced his shock withdrawal just a month before that race, is back in training & connections are aiming him at this year's Melbourne Cup. Ogden's racing manager Barry Simpson told UK Press Association: "He's cantering at the moment & we will step his work up next week. We'll just have to see how we get on with him. It's a question of soundness. If he stays sound, he'll run somewhere probably in August with a view that we'll go for the Gr1 Irish St Leger (14 furlongs at The Curragh on September 11) and the Gr1 Melbourne Cup. He hasn't had a chance to fulfil his potential. He won 3 on the bounce & then we had the problems with him. There wouldn't be many of his age group any better over 12 furlongs (2400m) to 14 furlongs (2800m) at that particular time." Back in August-September 2010, Sans Frontieres won Gr1 Irish Field St Leger (14 furlongs) at The Curragh, UK Gr2 Princess Of Wales's Stakes (12 furlongs) at Newmarket & UK Gr3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (13.5 furlongs) at Newbury.
