Variety Club Wins South Africa Gr1 Gold Challenge

In South Africa, front-running 3YO colt Variety Club (Var-La Massine, by Secret Prospector) scored a 1.25-lengths victory over his older rivals in the R700,000 (A$88,000) Gr1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge (1600m) at Clairwood. Variety Club (ridden by Anton Marcus for trainer Joey Ramsden) defeated Australian-bred 4YO gelding Castlethorpe (Not A Single Doubt-Park Heiress, by Sadler's Wells) & 5YO gelding Pierre Jourdan (Parade Leader-Vin Fizz, by Qui Danzig). Variety Club took his record to 9 wins (also including May's Gr2 Korea Racing Authority Guineas over 1600m at Greyville & April's Gr3 Winter Guineas over 1600m at Kenilworth, plus 2011's Gr1 Cape Guineas over 8 furlongs at Kenilworth & Gr2 Selangor Cup over 1600m at Kenilworth, Gr3 Matchem Stakes over 1400m at Durbanville & Gr3 The Langerman over 1500m at Kenilworth) & 4 placings (including both January's Gr1 Cape Derby over 2000m at Kenilworth & Gr1 Queen's Plate over 1600m at Kenilworth, plus 2011's Listed Champion Juvenile Cup over 1400m at Fairview) from 14 starts.
