Rain-Soaked Royal Ascot "Soft With Heavy Patches"
With Royal Ascot's carnival due to start next Tuesday, clerk of the course Chris Stickels told UK At The Races: "Last week we had a quite substantial amount of rain, 47 mm in total, and then at the end of the week it dried off nicely with the strong breezes. However the last 36 hours have been quite extraordinary. We've had 55 mm since 9pm on Sunday. . . . . We're now soft ground, there's the odd heavy patch, but it is certainly soft ground elsewhere." Stickels added: "Saturday & Sunday may bring more of a significant low & more significant rain again. If we get this rain at the weekend we will be lucky to start the meeting on good ground; the more likely scenario is we start on something easier."
