Monday, 18th June 2012

In Ireland, multiple Gr1-winning 9YO stallion Araafa (Mull Of Kintyre-Resurgance, by Polar Falcon) died "not long after arriving at Woodlands Stud in County Galway from England's Plantation Stud in Newmarket, where he had spent the initial 5 years of his stallion career" reported racingpost.com. Plantation Stud confirmed it is "waiting on the results of a post-mortem, but it appeared the horse had ruptured a blood vessel in the heart after covering a mare". Araafa (whose dam Resurgence is a full-sister to Gr1-winning sire Pivotal) was a 150,000 guineas (A$248,000) yearling who subsequently recorded 3 wins (including the Gr1 Irish 2000 Guineas & UK Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes) & 3 placings (in the UK Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, UK Gr3 Horris Hill Stakes & UK Listed Acomb Stakes) from 10 starts.
