Monday, 25th June 2012

Last year's Gr1 Melbourne Cup quinella Dunaden (who met significant trouble in the straight) & Red Cadeaux finished 2nd & 3rd, as Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms up-and-coming home-bred 4YO entire Sea Moon (Beat Hollow-Eva Luna, by Alleged) scored a 3.25-lengths victory in the £200,000 (A$320,000) Gr2 Hardwicke Stakes (12 furlongs) for 4YOs & up at Royal Ascot. Favourite Sea Moon (ridden by Ryan Moore for trainer Sir Michael Stoute) defeated fast-finishing French-bred 6YO entire Dunaden (Nicobar-La Marlia, by Kaldounevees) with a further 0.75-length to 6YO gelding Red Cadeaux (Cadeaux Genereux-Artisia, by Peintre Celebre); among the beaten brigade, Australian-owned duo Jakkalberry finished 5th & Quest For Peace 10th in the field of 12 runners. Sea Moon took his record to 5 wins (also including May's UK Listed Tapster Stakes over 12 furlongs at Goodwood, plus 2011's UK Gr2 Great Voltigeur Stakes over 12 furlongs at York) & 3 placings (including 2011's US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Turf over 12 furlongs at Churchill Downs & UK Gr1 St Leger Stakes over 14.5 furlongs a Doncaster) from 8 starts for £645,477 (A$1.033m) earnings.
