Melb Cup Possible For Dual Royal Ascot Winner
Meanwhile Irish trainer Willie Mullins confirmed the Gr1 Melbourne Cup is now firmly on the radar for emerging 5YO stayer Simenon (Marju-Epistoliere, by Alzao) following his 2 runaway victories in just 5 days during last week's Royal Ascot carnival: first by 6-lengths in the Ascot Handicap (2.5 miles) & then by 7-lengths in the Queen Alexandra Stakes (2.75 miles). Simenon (who spent a Northern Hemisphere winter & spring racing over hurdles) has won his last 3 starts (also including a hurdle over 2 miles at Cork in Ireland on May 25) & Mullins told UK At The Races after his latest victory: "He was very impressive & he seems a nice stayer. I'd say with his age & maturity he's just getting a bit stronger. The Melbourne Cup is at the back of our minds. I think we have a high enough rating now, but we'd have to qualify by either winning a Listed race or being placed in a Group race I believe, although I'd have to check the conditions." Overall Simenon currently boasts 4 wins & 2 placings (in 2010's UK Gr3 Classic Trial Stakes over 10 furlongs at Sandown Park & 2009's UK Gr3 Autumn Stakes over 8 furlongs at Ascot) from 17 starts.
