Blue Tale Of A Blue Tail

Wednesday, 1st August 2012

Wednesday Odd-Spot: In a bizarre tale out of the US, thoroughbredtimes.com reports "Dr. Kendall Hansen, co-owner and breeder of champion Hansen, told the Louisville Courier-Journal that his horse will race with the tip of his tail dyed blue on Saturday in the West Virginia Derby (G2) at Mountaineer Race Track". This is not the first time that Hansen, named after his owner, has attempted to race with a blue tail, the horse's tail "washed out after Kentucky stewards implied that the horse could be scratched for the offense" just prior to finishing runner-up in the Gr1 Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland. Hansen has agreed to "donate 1% of his net proceeds from the race to a pair of charities—an organization handpicked by Mountaineer that is connected to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Thoroughbred Racing Fan Association Inc., otherwise known as 'ThoroFan,' which supports fan development, education, and advocacy". It is unclear whether there is any connection between the blue tail and Hansen's regular jockey Ramon Dominguez apparently being unavailable due to "commitments elsewhere".
