Emergency Colic Surgery For Monarchos
In a replay of April last year, US Gr1 Kentucky Derby-winning 13-year-old stallion Monarchos (Maria's Mon-Regal Band, by Dixieland Band) has undergone emergency colic surgery. Standing at Nuchols Farm, "The 14-year-old was rushed to Hagyard Equine Medical Institute Tuesday night to undergo emergency colic surgery," revealed paulickreport.com. "Charles Nuckols III said Monarchos was recuperating and that updates on his progress would be available at a later date." With his progeny list headed by 2009 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, in 2001 Monarchos ran the 2nd-fastest Kentucky Derby in history (1min 59.97sec) to join Secretariat as the only winners to cover the 10 furlongs in less than 2 minutes, a record that still stands after the race's 2011 & 2012 renewals.
