Hawks Bay Defies Weight In Darwin Cup
Last year's Darwin Cup (2000m) winner 7YO gelding Hawks Bay (Black Hawk-La Belle Coquette) yesterday defied the maxim that weight stops trains. Lugging 62kg to victory in 2011's feature event at Fannie Bay, the much-travelled horse was asked to carry an almost unbelievable 64.5kg in this year's renewal and prevailed by a narrow margin for trainer Neil Dyer after a long stretch duel. The victory took Hawks Bay's record to 14 wins & 11 placings (10 of them as runner-up) from 52 starts for $848,550.
