Dual US Gr1 Winner Retired

Friday, 10th August 2012

Last month's US$600,000 Gr1 Diana Stakes (9 furlongs) winner, 4YO mare Winter Memories (El Prado-Memories Of Silver, by Silver Hawk), has been retired, reports bloodhorse.com. "This was a total surprise to everyone. She had trained flawlessly up to the Diana, raced impressively, and was happy to be back on the track again," commented John Phillips, who bred and raced the daughter of El Prado in the name of his family's Phillips Racing Partnership. "But two days ago her ankles were warm, precautionary X-rays were taken, and the results showed a degenerative bone disease. The irony is I've never been around a more sound horse." Blessed with a powerful finish which she also displayed in 2011's US$250,000 Gr1 Garden City Stakes (9 furlongs) for 3YO fillies at Belmont Park, Winter Memories was favourite (when runner-up) in the 2010 Gr2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. She retires with the record of 8 wins & 2 runners-up from 12 starts (11 of them Graded-Stakes) for US$1,268,100 earnings.
