Messara Cautious Of Ortensia Rivals In Today's Nunthorpe

Friday, 24th August 2012

As Australia's dual Gr1 winner Ortensia (Testa Rossa-Aerate's Pick, by Picknicker) prepares to tackle the Gr1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York today, trainer Paul Messara remains cautious in regard to a number of key rivals "including an unbeaten colt racing in the same silks as Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden", reports nzherald.co.nz. Also adding significant depth to the race are "Gr1 July Cup winner Mayson, Kings Stand Stakes runner-up Sole Power and established English sprinters Bated Breath and Dandy Boy". With potentially 30 starters, including Pearl Secret (Compton Place-Our Little Secret, by Rossini) and a number of untapped 2YOs, Messara commented, "This is the first group race over here with the 2-year-olds involved [for the first time] and they get a massive relief in terms of weight… They get around 49kg, so they get a lot off the older horses and that will make it interesting." Messara has been overseeing the final preparation of Ortensia since "late last week" and "can't fault Ortensia's condition as she tries to go back-to-back overseas after her King George Stakes win at Goodwood." He glowed, "She looks a picture of health… She's certainly improved [since Goodwood] and she's probably as good as we could have her."
