Monday, 27th August 2012

At Saratoga in the US, triple Gr1-winning Darley shuttler & US Eclipse Award-winning stallion Bernardini (A.P.Indy-Cara Rafaela, by Quiet American) & the sire Speightstown (Gone West-Silken Cat, by Storm Cat) each added a Gr1 success when respective sophomore colts Alpha (Bernardini-Munnaya, by Nijinsky) & Golden Ticket (Speightstown-Business Plan, by Deputy Minister) dead-heated for trainers K.McLaughlin & Ken McPeek in the US$1 million Travers Stakes (10 furlongs) for 3YOs. In 3rd place was the colt Fast Falcon (Awesome Again-My Chickadee, by Pleasant Tap). Rising star Alpha (who has competed in 5 Gr1 events already including runners-up in the Belmont Champagne Stakes & Aqueduct Wood Memorial) took his record to 5 wins & 2 runners-up from 9 starts. Golden Ticket, placed in the Gr2 Tampa Bay Derby in March but unraced since finishing runner-up in a claiming race in May, took his record to 2 wins & 5 placings from 10 starts. Watch the race on the right of the Daily News home page.
