Ortensia Wins UK Gr1 Nunthorpe Stakes

Monday, 27th August 2012

In the UK, Vinery Stud's 6-time Gr1-winning stallion Testa Rossa (Perugino-Bo Dapper, by Sir Dapper) celebrated a Gr1 triumph when Australian-bred 7YO mare Ortensia (Testa Rossa-Aerate's Pick, by Picnicker) came from well back to score by a neck for trainer Paul Messara in the £250,000 Gr1 Nunthorpe Stakes (5 furlongs) at York, over 4YO gelding Spirit Quartz (Invincible Spirit-Crystal Gaze, by Rainbow Quest) & 7YO gelding Hamish McGonagall (Namid-Anatase, by Danehill). Now a 3-time Gr1 winner, Ortensia (a $50,000 yearling consigned by Riverside Stud at the 2007 Inglis Premier Sale in Melbourne) took her record to 13 wins & 7 placings from 34 starts for $2,451,372 earnings. After the race, a jubilant but relieved Paul Messara enthused: "It's fabulous. It's the most amazing feel. To win a big one over here is a huge thrill. I couldn't believe it yesterday when it poured down. I thought we were coming here with no chance... Anyway, we're here and she's done it, just." Watch the race on the right of the Daily News home page.
