Owners & Jockey Charged After Betting Inquiry
Racing NSW stewards have laid several charges over beaten favourite Astronomer (Monashee Mountain-Heaven's Eyes by Vain) at Goulburn on June 16. The charges are set to be heard at the Racing NSW office in Sydney on September 11. Jockey Matthew Cahill has been charged with not allowing Astronomer to run on its merits. Part-owner Guy Orbell is facing three charges: that he entered an agreement with Mathew Cahill to ensure Astronomer didn't run on its merits, that he laid Astronomer with Betfair and that he made a misleading declaration to stewards in relations to those bets. Part-owner Robert Grynberg has been charged with being a party to Orbell in laying Astronomer to lose to Betfair, and also with making a misleading statement to stewards. Fellow part-owner, and bookie, Ken Orbell, has been charged with failure to record in his leger the details of bets placed on Astronomer at Goulburn. Another Walgett bookmaker, Richard Knight, faces four charges relating to the same race. The trainer of Astronomer, Matthew Dale, was interviewed by stewards but not charged. The race was Astronomer's first start, in which the 3YO gelding finished third.
