Howard Calls For Continued US Broodmare Importation
Ahead of his forthcoming annual pilgrimage to the major US breeding stock sales, Randwick Bloodstock's respected principal Brett Howard has called on local breeders to carefully consider the overwhelmingly positive statistical success of American broodmares whose subsequent stock race in Australia. Howard points out, "Mares bred in the US currently make up 2.67% of the Australian mare population however in recent years they have been producing approximately 10% of our annual stakes-winners. That is very impressive." Pointing to a glut of Gr1 winners and champions from US mares that have graced the turf in Australia, Howard urges: "If we plan to keep Australasia at the forefront of world breeding it is imperative we continue to invigorate our herd with these international female lines." Howard will be present at both Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland from November 5-16 where the combined number of mares for sale exceeds 2,000.
