Fat Al Wins Gr1 Epsom Handicap

Monday, 8th October 2012

In Australia, Emirates Park Stud's Gr1-winning stallion Al Maher (Danehill-Show Dancing, by Don't Say Halo) added a Gr1 success when 4YO gelding Fat Al (Al Maher out of Fatoon, by Snaadee) scored by a short-head for trainer Gai Waterhouse in the $500,000 Gr1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) for 3YOs+ at Randwick, over 4YO entire Ambidexter (Commands out of Dextrous, by Quest for Fame) & 5YO gelding Rolling Pin (Pins out of Gypsy's Daughter, by Mi Preferido). Fat Al (a $27,000 yearling consigned by Emirates Park at the 2010 Inglis Easter Sale in Sydney) took his record to 6 wins (also including the Gr3 Frank Packer Plate & Gr3 Carbine Club Stakes) & 3 placings (including his last starts in the Gr2 Shannon Stakes & Gr2 Theo Marks Stakes) from 10 starts for $606,250 earnings. The victory provided Gai Waterhouse with her 7th Epsom Handicap, a feat which equals that of her late father Tommy Smith.
