Double Dead Heat In Maryland

Wednesday, 10th October 2012

Wednesday Odd-Spot: Despite minimal pre-race fanfare for the modest Maryland mile claimer on Monday in the US, race 7 "literally went down to the wire", reports bloodhorse.com. In what was "a rather unique climax" there was "a dead heat for first and a dead heat for third." In the drive for victory nothing eventually separated outsider Rockaby Bay (21-1) and Masterel, with "a bang-bang finish by [joint 3rd place-getters] Elkhorn Creek and Colonel Bill", only a neck away. Longtime track announcer Dave Rodman summed it up with a metaphorical shake of the head: "I've never seen that in all my years… There have been dead heats for the win and off the board runners, but never one for win and show in the same race."
