Oliver Saga Throws Cox Plate Rides Into Disarray

Monday, 15th October 2012

Meanwhile, fall-out from the allegations of betting against jockey Damien Oliver has added additional complexities and intrigue into the Gr1 Cox Plate equation on the back of weekend defeats (see below) to favourite favourite Pierro & then 2nd favourite More Joyous. Oliver had been engaged by owner Lloyd Williams to ride recent Gr1 Turnbull Stakes winner Green Moon, but the booking has, according to dailytelegraph.com.au, been cancelled. In a further twist jockey Craig Williams, booked to ride Pierro (who remains an easing favourite), has chosen to forego the ride and partner regular mount Green Moon instead. The situation leaves trainer Gai Waterhouse – no doubt not for long – without a confirmed rider for Pierro in the southern hemisphere's equivalent of the weight-for-age Gr1 Arc. There are reports this morning that betting exchange Betfair suspended Cox Plate betting last night due to Pierro blowing out to $5 before firming back in again.
