UK Hoop Michael Hills Calls It Quits

Thursday, 18th October 2012

Following the recent retirement of twin brother Richard from the saddle, 49-year-old champion hoop Michael Hills, with "over 2,000 winners" has also opted to end his riding career, reports sportinglife.com. He displayed all his natural ability in guiding home Shaamit (Mtoto-Shomoose, by Habitat) in the 1996 Gr1 Epsom Derby when still an apprentice, and among many stars he piloted were dual Gr1 winners Royal Applause (Waajib-Flying Melody, by Auction Ring), leading New Zealand stallion Pentire (Be My Guest-Gull Nook, by Mill Reef) and Equiano (Acclamation-Entente Cordiale, by Ela-Mana-Mou). The prospect of riding leading 2013 1000 Guineas chance Just The Judge (Lawman-Faraday Light, by Rainbow Quest), whom he saluted on in Saturday's Gr2 Rockfel Stakes, was tempting but he was resolved, "The last thing I wanted was to go on too far. I would hate people to be walking off the stand going "this guy should give up... I'd love to hang around for the filly (Just The Judge) next year and other horses but when the time's right, I think the time's right".
