Dunaden To Shoulder Record Weight In Cup
Saturday's Gr1 Caulfield Cup winner and reigning Gr1 Melbourne Cup champion Dunaden (Nicobar-La Marlia, by Kaldounevees) will be forced to "break the metric weight-carrying record" if he is to succeed in his mission of successive cups on November 6th, reports theage.com.au. Penalised 1kg for his dramatic Caulfield Cup swoop, he will now carry 59kg, 0.5 kg more than Think Big in 1975 and 1kg more than Makybe Diva in 2005. Greg Carpenter, Racing Victoria's General Manager of Racing defended the impost: "With respect to Dunaden, I have to give it a weight that reflects his excellent win but that also gives him a chance of winning the Melbourne Cup ... It was one of the strongest renewals (of the Caulfield Cup) we had seen, and even though the margin was only a half length, I think he won reasonably comfortably. And because of the merit of that victory, I think it demanded a review of his handicap ... 59 off the back of his win in the Caulfield race still gives him a chance to be competitive but it is also a very big challenge for him."
