Frankie Still Has The Fire

Wednesday, 24th October 2012

Despite his recent departure from the powerful Godolphin stable, champion jockey Frankie Dettori will still be attempting to win the premiership next season in his first year riding freelance (following titles in 1994, 95 and 2004), reports guardian.co.uk. However, if he is to offer a serious challenge for the title his current graph will need to spike dramatically, given he is currently sitting on only 50 winners this season (at a meagre 13% winning strike rate) and given no jockey has claimed the riding honour with fewer than 136 winners for nearly 2 decades.  Dettori's agent Ray Cochrane remained bullish: "[Frankie] has confirmed he will be riding for everybody, everywhere, whenever they want him. Newmarket is full of good, young trainers who think the sun shines out of his you-know-what and he thinks the same of them. He's got five good years in him yet, he's got five very expensive kids. He can't afford to retire."  Richard Hughes, the jockey most are picking to win his first champion jockey's title quipped, "I hope he does [challenge], it'll be good fun."
