Gatewood Cup Start In Limbo

Friday, 26th October 2012

Despite international galloper and Gr3 Geelong Cup winner Gatewood (Galileo-Felicity, by Selkirk)) being penalized 1kg for the Gr1 Melbourne Cup on November 6, he is still in the unlikely column to make the final field with the additional impost lifting him only 5 places up the order of entry (41 to 36) and leaving him a precarious 12 places away from the 24 runner cut-off point, reports theage.com.au. He joins a cast of leading international hopefuls in a holding pattern with Lost In The Moment (29th), Geelong Cup 3rd Brigantin (30th), Prairie Star (31st), Gr2 Herbert Power Stakes winner Shahwardi (32nd) and Ibicenco (41st). Racing Victoria's Leigh Jordan commented: ''All those with that weight or less were told they would be rolling the dice if they made the trip and that's the way it might turn out for some of them ... There is still a chance that a few of those might sneak in, as there will be some attrition over this weekend and next Saturday." RVL General Manager of Racing Greg Carpenter explained Gatewood's penalty: ''The Geelong Cup was run at a very slow tempo, with the first 1800 metres of the race covered in approximately two minutes. The race eventuated into a sprint home, with Gatewood running his last 600 metres in 33.02 seconds ... Gatewood had two kilograms less than Brigantin [at Geelong] and with the penalty issued he now has half a kilogram less than him in the Melbourne Cup, representing a turnaround of 1.5 kilograms.'' In comparative terms, 2002 Geelong Cup winner Media Puzzle received a 1.5kg penalty for the Melbourne Cup following a 3-length victory at Geelong. Of course the rest is history with him winning on the 'First Tuesday in November' with 52.5kg.
