46 Remain In Cup Reckoning

Tuesday, 30th October 2012

Following Gr1 Melbourne Cup second acceptances yesterday, 46 entries (including 13 international raiders) still remain in the race for the 2012 prize, with Saturday's Gr3 Lexus Stakes the final chance for automatic qualification, reports dailytelegraph.com.au. Last start Gr3 Geelong Cup winner Gatewood will take his place, however a number of international entries on the cup cusp have opted to let fate take its course. OTI Racing's Terry Henderson, which part-owns Gatewood (33rd in order of entry) stressed that a Lexus win would still not make a cup start a fait accompli given his arduous preparation: "If he wins, he automatically qualifies for a Cup start, but that doesn't mean he will automatically run ... The Lexus will be his third race in five weeks, which is most unusual for a European galloper. Realistically we have three or four hours (after the Lexus) to be conclusively convinced that running in the Cup would be the best thing for the horse.'' On the opposite side of the ledger, Brigantin (27th), Godolphin's Lost In The Moment (26th) and Shahwardi (29th) have opted not to disturb their preparations and instead will hope for a minor cup attrition rate. RVL's Leigh Jordan explained: "They don't want to race their horses again before the Cup and so they are prepared to take the gamble.''
