RVL Trackwork Times In The Dark

Tuesday, 30th October 2012

Racing Victoria is reviewing the traditional early start times for training racehorses. Worried that 3am starts are contributing to the difficulties in retaining and attracting staff to the industry, RVL has ordered a review that will examine optimum working times for horses, reports dailytelegraph.com.au. CEO Rob Hines commented: "One of the stumbling blocks we've found to growing a vibrant industry workforce is the early hours employees are required to undertake in the training of horses ... Stable employees and trainers alike are often on duty from 3am for the day's training schedule, with a number also taking in a race meeting in the afternoon." Hines stressed the need to assess "optimum working hours" as central to the review and suggested that vigorous debate on the issue would be part of the process.
