De Kock Duo Primed For Dubai

Thursday, 7th March 2013

Leading South African hoop Anthony Delpech has jetted to Dubai after being called by trainer Mike de Kock to take the reins on Australian-bred Champion racemare Igugu (Galileo-Zarinia, by Intikhab) on Meydan's Super Saturday card this Saturday, reports goldcircle.co.za. Igugu will be one of two key de Kock runners engaged in the Gr1 US$300,000 Jebel Hatta (1800m on turf), joining dual Gr1-winning South African-bred 5YO entire The Apache (Mogok-Apache Rose, by Dolpour) in the race. With this weekend's race a likely final tune-up for the Dubai World Cup meeting on March 30, Delpech was understandably elated with the booking: "[Mike] just told me he had two horses in the race, The Apache and Igugu, and would I like to ride Igugu … She is so talented and I'm just really excited to have been given the opportunity." He added, "I've ridden on the old course (Nad Al Sheba) but not the new one (Meydan)." Delpech has already tasted success on Dubai World night when steering 6-time Gr1-winner & 2006-07 Hong Kong Horse-Of-The-Year Vengeance Of Rain (Zabeel-Danelagh, by Danehill) to victory in 2007. Igugu's last start (and debut international outing) was a tenacious third off a hot tempo in the Gr2 Balanchine Stakes (1800m) at Meydan on Feb 21.
